In Niger, crop farmers are extending their fields into areas designated for livestock

In Niger, certain enclaves have been set aside as pasture for herders and their livestock. Analysing Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2016 and 2023, Hoefsloot Spatial Solutions has established that crop farmers are moving into these areas to cultivate them — raising the risk of conflict. What is driving it? Population growth pushing farmers onto new land? A gradual greening of the Sahel that makes cultivation viable? These questions remain open, and further research is needed.
